Raising Human Consciousness

The purpose of this video is to consider practical and systematic ways of raising human consciousness above mere survival. Humans are the only species with an inbuilt ability of doing so but we are largely unaware of it. Our natural instincts keep our consciousness so enslaved in furthering themselves that we fail to seek its release from them.

All beings are programmed to survive. When we are born, our consciousness is limited to survival. While no effort is required to keep it at that level, human effort is required to raise it above mere survival.

Seven levels of consciousness are identified in this video: (1) the lowest level of bare survival, (2) sensual pleasure, (3) gut feel, (4) heart center, (5) cognitive perception, (6) knowledge, understanding and will, and finally (7) spiritual wisdom. It is worth noting that that levels of consciousness below the heart center primarily relate with physical desire and those above relate with understanding, values, relationship and belonging.

The video singles out the state of harmony and coherence between the activities of the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of our autonomic nervous system as the cause leading to a rise in the level of our consciousness. We have to make an effort to create this harmony. This effort can primarily be psychological or physiological. The psychological effort consists of developing an ability of one-pointed focus, while the physiological consists of developing a habit of conscious breathing.

Consciousness at the level of mere survival makes us self-centered and apart from the others. As we raise our consciousness above mere survival, we begin to relate and connect with the others. Ascending to the ultimate level of spiritual wisdom, we relate and connect with the entirety of existence through the Absolute spirit which underlies it.
